Overall Takeaways

Similar to other cable and utility providers that also provide home security services, Cox has some positives and negatives when it comes to how customers feel about their services. They have low prices versus many competitors, but also have reports of issues with contract lengths, cancellations, and automatic roll-overs that tie people into services that they no longer want.

Here are what customers say are Cox's biggest advantages:

  • Low Monthly Prices
  • No Equipment Fees in Most Cases
  • Customizable Equipment Options
.

In addition to these positives, there are some complaints from some customers about Cox's service. Here's what they mention as the biggest disadvantages:

  • Reported Issues of Malfunctioning Equipment
  • Complaints About Customer Service
  • Contract Cancellation Fees and Automatic Rolling Over
  • Reports of Issues with Monitoring Service

Product Details

One of the benefits of Cox is that they offer equipment as part of their monthly fee. That said, there may be fees for additional equipment (if you need a more customizable security set-up). Also, there is a $50 installation fee that is standard and may increase if you choose to include more custom options.

Cox's Equipment

Cox has two plans that include slightly different equipment packages. The Essential Package includes 2 window/door sensors and motion sensor (with their wireless router that connects the system together), while the Preferred package adds an HD camera to the mix with video monitoring. This equipment is mid-grade. Some customers have reported issues with the equipment malfunctioning in certain instances and it being difficult for Cox to solve these issues.

Cox's Monitoring

Cox's monitoring services are its core business and way that it gets recurring revenue from customers. They don't market their facilities or call centers very much so we are a bit disappointed by the lack of transparency when it comes to that. For servvices, they offer two different plans for customers. Here are the details on their plans:

PackageDetails
Essential Package
($30/mo + Fees)
  • 24/7 Professional Security Monitoring
  • Real-time text & Email Alerts
  • Starter Equipment Kit (Described Above)
Preferred Package
($45/mo + Fees)
All in Essential Package and:
  • 1 HD Camera
  • Remove Live Video Monitoring

Monitoring & Security Quality

There are mixed reviews from customers when it comes to Cox's monitoring service. These complaints appear to mostly be due to equipment faults and issues with malfunctions. Some have described their monitoring connectivity to be intermittent and connections falling off occasionally with no resolution or reason for why.

Most people describe customer service as friendly and professional, but at times service agents are not as skilled or useful solving problems as customers would like. This means that at times, some customers report that their service fails when they are burglarized or there is another security situation that they need help for.

Alternatives

Frontpoint

There are some great alternatives to cable bundling that will keep you safer and more secure for longer. One of the best options is Frontpoint. Frontpoint has one of the best scores when it comes to security monitoring and ease of set-up. Rather than having to pay extra for installation, Frontpoint sends the equipment directly to their customers with easy to follow instructions for set-up. This means that getting started is faster and simpler. Also, the quality of service and monitoring is superior with folks feeling more secure and having good experiences with Frontpoint's agents.

Vivint

One thing that is really lacking from Cox's services was smart home features as part of their basic security plans. You may want to remotely lock your doors or manage your thermostat while you are away. Vivint is one of the best home security services for those that also want to take advantage of smart home features like that. With really high ratings from customers and good customization options, Vivint is a name to consider if you want to control your home while away.
